    The Careers & Employability Service offers a fantastic programme of career development workshops and employer presentations to help our students maximise their chances of career success.  The workshop sessions are crammed with information and practical tips, whilst our employer presentations offer students the chance to network, find out about opportunities and what organisations look for in potential candidates.

  • British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness

    Deaf Awareness course

    We are looking to plan a one-day Deaf Awareness course in All Saints on Monday 21st May 2012. The one day course is externally delivered, and in view of the cost  it will work out around £50 a head payable by your department.

     Brief details of the course are as follows:

     Deaf Awareness Training

    This 1 day course is for any member of staff likely to be communicating with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The course is for beginners and so no prior experience is needed.

    Objectives

    The aim of this course is to give hearing people a better understanding of the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people.

    Course Content

     Good communication strategies Hearing Aids – help or hindrance? British manual alphabet – Fingerspelling Putting good communication into practice British Sign Language – Basic Signs Aspects of deaf culture Psychological effects of deafness Who and what is available to help deaf people Improving your workplace – making it user friendly Disability Discrimination Act in Higher Education inrelation to deaf people

     Facilitators: External Consultants

    Format: Workshop featuring presentation and group activities

     Time: 9.00am to 4.30pm

    Course Booking Forms can be found at www.mmu.ac.uk/humanresources/devandtrain/ and should be forwarded to OD & T, 6th Floor, All Saints. They need to be manually signed and a Budget Code clearly annotated in the appropriate box.

     

    British Sign Language Course

    We are running an instance of British Sign Language (introductory) Course on Wednesday 23rd May 2012 at All Saints.

    This 1 day course is for any member of staff likely to be communicating with BSL users. The course is for beginners and so no prior experience is needed.

    There are an estimated 60,000 BSL users in Britain making it the most widely used UK language after English and Welsh.

    Course Content

    • Learn the finger-spelling alphabet allowing them to spell any word using sign language
    • Be able to give basic information about themselves in BSL
    • Be able to sign numbers in BSL
    • Learn how to give directions in BSL
    • Learn a number of signs useful in their workplace

    Objectives

    The aim of the course is to give participants an introduction to this fascinating language and build confidence in their ability to communicate with BSL users

    There is a cost of £70 to your department, and your booking form should be signed by your manager/budget holder. This cannot be accepted without a budget code. If you can confirm a firm booking in the meantime then please drop us an email to save a place pending our receipt of the completed form.
