Peat: When, Where, How, What2
Dr James Rowson, MMU
Peatlands were formed approximately 10,000 years ago in the UK at the end of the last glaciation. Peatlands have a global range occurring in all climatic zones apart from desert. Peat is formed when soil production exceeds decomposition due to anaerobic conditions, leading to an increase in soil depth. These soil depths can reach several meters and have carbon concentrations of >50%, therefore, peat is an important store of carbon, storing 30% of global soil carbon despite covering only 3% of Earth’s land area.
Concerns have been raised about how these sensitive ecosystems will react to climate change. The PEATBOG project aims to answers these questions with a field scale manipulation comprising a warming treatment and a summer drought. In a worst case scenario peat can lose carbon at a rapid rate due to climate change or anthropogenic influences such as atmospheric pollution or wildfire. What can be done to prevent this, and restore peat to a carbon sink? A large scale restoration scheme on Bleaklow aimed to answer these questions, with a focus on CO2 emissions, demonstrating the effectiveness of these approaches.
