  • Observations of Teaching Practice workshop

    Session Outline: Observations of teaching practice provide an opportunity for colleagues to exchange ideas, share good practice and identify developmental points in relation to an actual teaching activity. This workshop provides a continuing professional development opportunity for colleagues –

    • already involved in observations of teaching/or academic related practice
    • wanting to know more about observations of practice
    • involved in supporting colleagues who are new to teaching
    • conducting observations of practice for colleagues participating in the Post-graduate certificate in Academic Practice

    This session will consider the contribution that observations of practice can make to staff development and, through this, to an enhancement of the student experience. Specifically the workshop will consider -

    • Observations of teaching practice as a staff development activity
    • Creating a working agreement for the observation
    • Conducting the observation
    • Providing developmental feedback

  • Monthly Business Group at Innospace

    Join us for the tenth Innospace monthly business group on Thursday 20th October, to share ideas, talk to the MMU business support network and learn something new.

    The Innospace monthly business group creates a practical and supportive environment for NEW and ASPIRING entrepreneurs to prepare for the launch of their business.

    The theme of this month’s workshop is to provide an overview of the key issues to consider when employing people within your business.

    This session will take you through the basic aspects of employment law and will cover areas such as:

    - Employee/ employer relationship

    - Principles of an employment contract

    - Policies and procedures in the workplace

    Ruth and Jan established the HR Solutions Partnership in May 2007 to provide HR expertise to companies without their own HR department or who simply want to supplement their own internal HR support with consultancy advice, and /or managers who require support to help them navigate through the legalities of employing and managing people. However, their reputation in the market place has taken them beyond the small business sector, working with a wide variety of businesses across the UK and internationally.

    Since then they have been involved in a variety of HR activities, ranging from the design of strategic HR initiatives for top Fortune 500 companies, bespoke training and development workshops, to the provision of day to day advice and guidance for small businesses.

    Come along at 10am for coffee and join in the practical and interactive session on the theme of the month then stay and work with the MMU business support team on your business idea.

    Bring along:

    - any questions you may have regarding employing people

    - any specific issues you wish to explore in relation to people you employ

    - your laptop (if you like to work paper free)

    Copies of slides will be made available after the session

  • Disability Equality Action Course at Crewe

    Disability Equality Action Training for Staff at Crewe

    There is a half-day instance of this mandatory course on the following dates, and we have places as indicated below:

    Wednesday 30 November – 9 places

    This programme, facilitated by Breakthrough UK, will enable you to:

    • explain and apply the social model of disability in practical, work based situations;
    • identify environmental and attitudinal barriers faced by disabled people in accessing employment, services and education, and develop practical strategies to challenge and remove them in dialogue with colleagues and managers;
    • identify key statutory duties as defined by the Equality Act 2010 and identify the ways in which these duties relate to workplace practices and the delivery of services.
    • identify current examples of best, inclusive practice and appropriate sources of support and guidance
    • identify your responsibilities and accountability under MMU’s single equality scheme with specific reference to disability related elements of the scheme.
    • develop the confidence and skills to communicate effectively with disabled staff and students;
    • recognise the diversity of disabled people
    • identify key changes that need to be made and produce an action plan to facilitate these changes.

  • Mental health awareness

    Calling all staff!

    Did you know, depression with anxiety is experienced by 9.7% of people in England (Mind, Mental Health Organisation).

    Monday 10th October was World Mental health day and the Equality & Diversity (E&D) team are aiming to raise the profile and remove the stigma of Mental Health.

    Therefore throughout this week you can learn about getting your mental health five a day.
