On Friday 30 September, staff and students at Manchester Metropolitan University are facilitating a unique workshop at the CUBE Gallery on Portland Street, that brings people of all ages together to explore how the city can be designed to be more inclusive, open and accessible. The Sharing the City workshop and accompanying exhibition is the latest collaboration between Manchester Met and Manchester City Council's Valuing Older People (VOP) Team.
Large-scale public engagement
Over the last two years MMU students have worked with over 400 people across the city. Through listening to people's needs they have designed Manchester spaces and places in whole new ways, covering everything from job centres, canals, shopping centres and allotments.
Positive Places
The workshop is suitable for people aged between 8 and 80 and will include speed dating sessions and interactive games to bring diverse people together. The exhibition is a chance to contribute to an interactive map that showcases the places that people of all ages really like across Manchester.
Sharing the City is led by MMU architect Stefan White and the work feeds into the Council's membership of the World Health Organisation's Network of Age Friendly Cities and the Manchester Ageing Strategy.
Sharing the City runs until 30 September between 12 noon and 17:00 at CUBE Gallery.
To register, or find out more, contact Stefan White, s.white@mmu.ac.uk
To talk more about Manchester City Council's Age-Friendly City work, contact Patrick Hanfling or Paul McGarry on 234 4188 or p.mcgarry@manchester.gov.uk
Dear colleages
The Coffee and Conversation sessions provide an opportunity for any member of staff to drop in for a chat, a coffee and cake with members of the University's management team (this group includes the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice- Chancellors, the Directors of Finance, HR, Services, Marketing, Communication and Development, the Registrar and the Deans of faculty).
Three or four members of the top management team will be on hand at each session and are looking forward to talking to you in an informal and relaxed environment about any issue that you'd like to discuss.
The session today, 22 September, takes place between 10.00am and 12.00 noon in the Refectory at Didsbury.
Very positive feedback has been received from staff attending the previous sessions which ran during July and early September.
Please come along if you can.
