SHARON Handley has been appointed to the role of Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Law and Social Sciences.
As Head of Languages, Dr Handley has overseen a welcome growth in numbers in a declining HE sector, a broadening of the portfolio of languages to include Japanese, Chinese and Arabic as well as EFL and TEFL, the successful directorship of the North West Consortium of the Routes into Languages programme, excellent student satisfaction and strong commercial activity.
Under her leadership the Department of Languages developed EFL services for international students across the whole university which are highly rated in the International Student Barometer and the EFL provision was rated as excellent in a recent British Council Inspection.
Kevin Bonnett said: “I am sure we all congratulate Sharon on her new role and also wish Ann Holmes well in her new post at the University of Wolverhampton.”
Sharon is a scholar of Spanish language and contemporary Spanish literature, and an expert in the work of the poet Federico Garcia Lorca.
Congratulations also to Professor Martin Hewitt who is now head of the new combined Department of History, Politics and Philosophy, and to Dr Carmen Herrero who is the new Acting Head of Languages.
