Join the Midnight Walk

Fred McDwyer

BIG-hearted MMU Cheshire staff are hosting one of South Cheshire’s major charity events later this term.

Fred McDwyer, security officer at Crewe, has arranged for the annual midnight walk for St Luke’s Hospice to start this year from the Crewe Campus on Saturday, June 9.

Last year’s walk raised more than £250,000 for the Cheshire hospice with around 200 participants.

Curiously, the event is for ladies only, but normally family members and friends also turn out as marshalls or help with entertainment and refreshments.

Considerable support

Volunteer walkers are sought and there is already considerable support from staff on campus: volunteers from within the security team and facilities will keep buildings open throughout the night so toilets and facilities can be used, car parking etc. Dean, Dennis Dunn has agreed to fund refreshments for walkers and families.

Fred McDwyer said: “As the walk is for ladies only, entertainment and refreshments within the Student Zone will be provided for friends & family who may be supporting them.

“If you are interested in helping to organise some activities on campus, for example Lads & Dads football on the floodlit pitch, games within the Sports Hall, or any other activity you feel may contribute to the evening, please contact me.”

Jane Thompson, head of Event Management at the Hospice, said: “I am delighted to say how helpful and supportive Fred has been.  It was his idea for the Walk to start at MMU.  He has volunteered on the walk for many years and he recognised that he and  his team could help us greatly.”

The Full-Moon Walk (13.1 miles) will start from MMU and take the walkers to Nantwich and back to the campus.  There is also an opportunity to participate in a Half-Moon Walk (6.5 miles), which again will start from and finish at the campus.

If you wish to participate in either of the walks, please register at:     http://www.midnightwalk.co.uk/.

The Hospice also needs volunteers for the event, so if you wish to help, please follow this link:     http://www.midnightwalk.co.uk/PAGES/volunteer.html

Added Fred, who is assisted by student Craig Heap: “As we are both quite new to event organising, we would like to set up a little group to organise all activities not directly involving the ’walks’ and would very much welcome some assistance from staff and students."
