MANCHESTER reinforced its reputation as a mecca for sport when its student team became UK champions on Sunday.
The Manchester Metros which comprises students and a few staff from the city’s universities were existing Northern League champions before beating the Southern Champions Oxford Blues 8-5 to win the sport’s Division 1.
“It makes us the best university team in the UK,” enthused Shayne Langlois, a team striker and an international officer for MMU.
With five MMU students on the team, including recently added star keeper Dec Ryan (MMU Cheshire), the team is unbeaten all season.
Shayne, a Canadian, was brought up playing ice hockey, and is also the Metro’s vice-chairman and head coach.
He added: “We are playing in the National Championship tournament this weekend in Sheffield and hope to continue our winning streak for Manchester.”
